Thinking about planning a visit to Australia? Then how can you miss out Melbourne, the capital of Victoria and the second most populated city in Australia. I spend a week in this pleasing city and still don’t feel I saw much of it. There is something exciting to do here all 365 days and trust me you cannot get bored of this city and even if you do, head out for day trips and get exploring the countryside.
The list of attractions and activities in this city is endless but to make your life easy I am listing out my favourite places to check out in Melbourne.
Federation Square – Situated in the heart of this city, it’s hard to miss this iconic cultural hub. There are tons of restaurants and cafes around and at times this area is also a part of many events and celebrations. Nearby you can even have a look at The National Gallery of Victoria or the Aboriginal cultural hub known as Koorie Heritage Trust Inc.
Eureka Tower – One of the things I make sure to add in my travel bucket list is observatories and one such place in Melbourne is the Eureka Skydeck. Looking at the city from such a great height makes you realise how far spread out Melbourne is.
State Library Victoria – One of the oldest libraries in Australia this place is well used by tourists and locals. It is said that there are more than 2 million books to be found here and for all you bookworms this is a heavenly abode. I loved the architecture and the style of this library and it’s usually full so makes sense to go early if you like to spend some time working, reading or researching.
Melbourne Lanes and Arcades – Lanes and arcades are pretty popular not only in Melbourne but also in Sydney and Brisbane. There are tours happening in Melbourne which are curated around the history of arcades alone. Some beloved arcades here are Block Arcade, Royal Arcade and Campbell Arcade.
Another surprising thing I saw here is the street art and there are Lanes dedicated to appreciate some really cool graffiti. My favourite lanes are AC/DC Lanes, Hosier Lanes, Croft Alley and Centre Place.
National Art Gallery of Victoria – This distinguished art museum in Melbourne exhibits some great collections from around the world. Being one of the oldest galleries in Australia this place is popular among the tourists and it also hosts special exhibitions often.
Shrine of Remembrance – Build after the First World War to honour the Victorians who were a part of the war, but now it serves to commemorate all Australians who have ever been part of a war. Since you are around the area it would be good to even check out the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Queen Victoria Market – If you love food this market is a
South Bank – Either take a cruise over the beautiful Yarra River or you can explore the numerous restaurants and cafes around the precinct. My favourite place to head over the weekend is The Crown, it’s crowded and I love the atmosphere around.
Old Melbourne Gaol – Get chills visiting Melbourne’s jail which was built around the 1800s and also housed some of the most scandalous criminals out of which a few were even executed here. There are night tours operating here too and it does seem pretty haunted while hearing the spine chilling stories.
Luna Park – Take a day out and spend your time at the delightful Luna Park which also has one of the oldest operating roller coaster in the world. It’s a fun place not only for kids but also for adults, there are plenty of rides including my favourite Ghost Train.
Flinders Street – A visit to Melbourne won’t be completed without visiting this prominent location which also is the home to Australia’s first-ever station. You can find many restaurants and cafes around including famous laneways and attractions.
Melbourne sure has plenty of things to see and do, this city knows how to keep you entertained. The funky lanes, the crazy dessert parlours, luxury shopping and the nightlife here will surprise you! Melbourne, I can myself living here in a few years.
