Nestled in the Aegean Sea, the island of Skopelos is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by travellers seeking a unique and unforgettable vacation experience. From its stunning beaches and traditional churches to its rich cultural heritage and mouth-watering cuisine, Skopelos has something for everyone.
First on the list of must-visit attractions is the charming Skopelos town, with its maze of narrow streets and traditional whitewashed buildings. Visitors here can learn about the island’s rich history at the Cultural Heritage Museum and also hike to the Venetian Castle of Chora which is about 20min away from the harbour, it offers a fantastic view of the town. Did you know Skopelos is also known as Mamma Mia island, the popular movie was shot in some parts of the island and you can even take a tour which will take you to the filming locations.
For beach lovers, Skopelos is home to some of the most breathtaking beaches in Greece, including Stafylos, Kastani, Limnonari, and Panormos. Each beach offers its unique charm, from secluded coves to bustling beach bars.
For those interested in religion, the island boasts several stunning churches, including the iconic The Church of the Virgin Mary at the forefront of the harbour. Monastery of Iera Moni Sotiros is another place you can visit or the Monastery of Timios Prodromos.
Take a stroll around Glossa, the second largest town on the island, it is charming and feels so authentic and peaceful. I highly recommend you check out a cafe here for tea or coffee, they even have some brilliant restaurants which serve up the famous Skopelos Pie. While on your visit to Glossa, you can even consider stopping by Loutraki, a small port which is below Glossa.
Pirate Graves of Sentoukia, is a fun thing to witness, Mount Karia has some pirate graves and they used to loot these islands, the locals believe that a ghost is watching over the treasure buried with the pirates, probably it is a false folktale but a place to check out.
Skopelos also offers several unique activities for visitors to enjoy. Try a traditional Greek cooking class, go hiking in the lush green hills, or take a scenic boat tour around the island of Alonissos, but out of everything my favourite activity remains the Olive oil tasting at Glossa.
When it comes to food, Skopelos is a foodie’s paradise. From fresh seafood to traditional Greek dishes, the island’s cuisine is not to be missed. Be sure to try the local speciality, Skopelitiko, a dish made with lamb, tomato, and onion. Some restaurants to check out here are Plantanos, and Cafe Thalassa.
Getting to Skopelos is easy, with daily ferry services available from the mainland in Athens. The ferry journey takes approximately 5 hours, but for those in a hurry, there are also flights available from Athens to the nearby island of Skiathos, followed by a short ferry ride to Skopelos.
Skopelos Island is a true gem in the Aegean Sea, offering travellers a unique and unforgettable vacation experience. So, pack your bags and head to Skopelos for an adventure you’ll never forget.
