For history lovers, you should explore the Archaeological Museum in the town as its showcases Kythira’s rich history, The museum displays artefacts from the island’s long history, including pottery, sculptures, and coins. Visitors can learn about Kythira’s past and its role in ancient Greece.

Discover the Castle town of Palaiochora, the well-preserved castle dates back to medieval times and offers a glimpse into Kythira’s ancient past, the entrance is free to all.

Around the island – If you come to Kythira then a visit to Avlemonas coastal village is a must, it is quaint, peaceful and most importantly beautiful. Build around a cove where you can swim or just relish the plain sight of it. There is also a beach close by from here called Paleopoli beach which is popular among tourists. 

For people interested in local shopping then head to Livadi, there is a market which happens every Wednesday attracting a lot of tourists. One famous landmark here is the bridge of Katouni, it has 12 arches and is a magnificent stone bridge.

Nearby islands – If you are around Kythira, do not miss the opportunity to visit the islet called Hytra by boat, there is a cave too there. Antikythera is another fascinating island nestled between Kythira and Crete, it has only slightly over 50 residents which is why its nature is still wild and untouched!

Getting to Kythira from Athens is easy, with regular flights which take around 20-25mins, and with ferry services, while it’s available it is still quite time-consuming. Do check the timetable for ferries departing from the port as the schedule changes frequently.
