Uncovering the Treasures of Kastellorizo Island in Greece

Just off the coast of Turkey, Kastellorizo Island in Greece is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. With a population of only around 500 people, this charming island may not have the best beaches, but it offers plenty of other attractions to make up for it. From neo-classical houses and colourful facades to a ruined castle and ancient monastery, Kastellorizo Island is rich in history and culture. Not to mention, the island boasts some of the best diving spots in Greece. If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination with stunning views, Kastellorizo Island should be at the top of your list.

Attractions: – The main town on Kastellorizo Island is Megisti, also known as Kastelorizo. Here, you’ll find neo-classical houses with colourful facades that make for great photo ops. Above the harbour of Mandraki is the Cathedral of Agios Konstantinos and Agia Eleni, which were the patron saints of the island. For a stunning view, head to the Monastery Agios Giorgis Vounou. Just minutes away from the harbour, you’ll find the Archeological Museum, which houses artefacts from the island’s ancient past. For history lovers, check out the old mosque near the harbour, which has been transformed into a Folklore museum. And for those who love to see more of the island, make your way to the top of the hill to see the Castle of the Knights of St. John, which was built in the 14th century.

Beaches:- While Kastellorizo Island may not have the best beaches, there are still some spots worth checking out. Mandraki Beach is a popular choice, with crystal-clear waters and a relaxed atmosphere. Another option is the island of Saint George, which is just a 15-minute boat ride away and costs 5 euros. Here, you’ll find a perfect place to swim and soak up the sun.

Activities:- One of the main draws of Kastellorizo Island is its diving spots. With clear waters and a diverse array of marine life, this is a top destination for divers of all skill levels. But there’s more to do than just diving. Hiking is a popular activity on the island, with plenty of trails offering stunning views of the coastline. For a bit of history, take a boat trip to the Isle of Ro, where a single lady once lived. And don’t miss the Blue Cave, also known as Azure Grotto, which is the biggest underwater cave in Greece. Here, you can see stalactites and one of the chambers of the cave is a famous hideout for Mediterranean monk seals. For a change of scenery, take a boat trip to the gorgeous town of Symi. And if you’re into water sports, snorkelling, spearfishing, and more are all available on the island.

Getting There:- To reach Kastellorizo Island, you can fly from Athens, which takes about an hour. Alternatively, you can take a boat from Port Pireaus to Athens, which takes more than 20 hours.
