Euboea Island, the second largest island in Greece, is a haven of natural beauty and wildlife. Separated from the mainland by the strait of Euripus, this 175 km long island has been called by various names over the years. With its diverse attractions, the island is a perfect destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Main town – Chalkis, the main city on the island, is connected to the mainland by two bridges. To fully experience the island, it is recommended to stay for at least a week. Explore the seafront’s numerous restaurants and cafes, visit the Archaeological Museum and the Mayor’s Hall. Across the iconic bridge of Chalkis, you’ll find the Karababa Castle, built by the Ottomans in the 17th century, which offers a breathtaking view of the town. The Roman Aqueduct is another ancient sight to behold. Church of Paraskevi, one of the oldest churches in Greece, is also worth a visit. During the Turkish era, it was converted into a mosque.
Drimona Waterfall and St. David’s Monastery offer a magical experience in the midst of a forest. The monastery, which was founded in 1550, was rebuilt in 1877 after its original building burned down.
The hot springs of Edipsos are a famous spa town known for its thermal springs with healing properties. Around town, there are about 60 springs, attracting personalities like Winston Churchill and Greta Garbo.
Ochi Mountain in the south has the popular attraction of Drakospita, which perches on hills and mountains. There are about 23 megalithic houses, and many theories surround them. The gorge of Dimossaris is known for its beauty and wild species of birds. A trail starting from the gorge passes through the village of Lenoseoi, the dragon houses, and ends at Kallianou Beach, spanning 10km.
Ancient Eretria, just 20 km away from the capital, is a must-visit for history enthusiasts. The ruins date back to the 9th century and include ancient baths, a theatre, temples, two palaces, and a residence with mosaic work. The archaeological museum of Eretia is also worth a visit.
Beaches to see – Kalamos Beach, with its transparent color and the option to camp overnight, is a must-visit. Thapsa Beach is difficult to access but breathtaking. Gregolimano Beach is known for its shallow and clear water. Limnionas Beach, with its clear water, is quite spectacular.
For adventure enthusiasts – Euboea Island offers an array of activities like mountain biking, hiking, driving, snorkeling, diving, kayaking, sailing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing.
Island Hopping -You can also take a boat trip to Lichadonisia for island hopping. Within 15 minutes, you’ll arrive at the paradise of Greece. These islets, formed by volcanic eruptions, are perfect for snorkeling and swimming. There are also a few shipwrecks to explore under the sea.
Other Places to Visit – If you have more time, spend some time in charming villages like Marmari, known for its beautiful harbour, and Limni village, it is a picturesque place with its tiny church and folklore museum, Don’t forget to Catch the sunset from the lovely cliff here. Lastly, check out Cape Kafireas, the southernmost tip of the island, where the water current is wild and numerous shipwrecks can be found.
To get to Euboea Island from Athens, you can either drive or take the train, which offers a service from Athens to Halkida.
