“Discover the Simple Beauty of Marathi, Greece”

Escape to the tranquil island of Marathi, where the simplicity of life reigns and the beauty of the Aegean Sea surrounds you. This tiny Greek island, with only 12 inhabitants, is the perfect destination to unwind and relax. Located just a short distance from the popular island of Patmos, Marathi offers visitors a chance to truly disconnect and recharge. While there aren’t many tourist attractions, Marathi’s charm lies in its simplicity and natural beauty. Here are some of the best things to do on this idyllic island.

  • Visit the Island’s Only Church – Marathi’s only church is a must-visit attraction. Nestled amidst the island’s scenic landscape, the Church of St. John the Theologian is a beautiful example of traditional Greek Orthodox architecture. The church is still in use today, and visitors are welcome to attend services and admire the religious artwork and frescoes inside.
  • Savor Local Greek Cuisine at the two Tavernas – One of the best ways to experience the culture of Marathi is through its local cuisine. The island boasts two tavernas, serving up traditional Greek dishes made with locally-sourced ingredients. Be sure to try the fresh seafood, grilled meats, and the island’s famous fava beans. Enjoy your meal while taking in the stunning views of the Aegean Sea.
  • Relax on the Sandy Beach – Marathi’s only sandy beach is a great spot for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing. The crystal clear waters are perfect for a refreshing dip, while the soft sand provides a comfortable spot for sunbathing. The beach is not crowded, so you can truly unwind and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Getting to Marathi can be a bit of a challenge, but the journey is worth it. The island is not serviced by an airport, so the best way to reach it is by taking a ferry from the nearby island of Patmos to Arki, and then another short ferry ride to Marathi. If you are flying to Greece, you can also fly to nearby islands such as Samos, Leros, Kos, or Rhodes, and then take a ferry to Arki.

Marathi may not offer the glitz and glamour of some of Greece’s more popular tourist destinations, but it makes up for it in its natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. With just a handful of residents and a limited number of tourist attractions, Marathi is the perfect place to escape the chaos of city life and enjoy the simpler things in life. So pack your bags, and get ready to relax and unwind on the idyllic island of Marathi.
