Escape the Crowds and Experience Authentic Greek Island Life on Fourni Island

Nestled in the heart of the Aegean Sea, the Fourni archipelago is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. With its 20 scattered islands, only two of which are inhabited, it offers a remote and peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Fourni Island is the largest of the two inhabited islands and offers a range of attractions, villages, beaches, and activities to indulge in. From the picturesque town of Kambos to the stunning beaches of Psili Ammo and Kassidi, there is something for everyone on this tranquil island.

One of the main attractions on the island is Kambos, the largest town on the island. With its narrow cobblestone alleys, mulberry trees, and local shops, Kambos oozes charm and character. The town’s main square, Fourni Square, is a great spot to relax and people watch, while the Acropolis on the hill of Agios Georgios offers a breathtaking view of the town and the surrounding sea. Excavation on the island has even unearthed the ruins of a Cyclopean wall, which adds to the island’s rich history and culture.

For those looking to explore the island’s villages, Kambi village is a must-visit. Located just a kilometre away from Kambos, visitors will pass through three windmills on the way. The bay here is also a great spot for swimming and sunbathing. Chrisomilia village, situated on the north of the island, is another charming village that is home to a lovely beach and several fish tavernas. The best way to reach the village is by boat as the roads are not easily accessible. The tower of Agia Triada is another attraction worth visiting in Chrisomilia. If you enjoy hiking, take a 46-minute walk to the ancient quarry of Petrokopio on the west side of the island. Gravels of marble can still be seen, and the marble quarry used to supply marble to many places in the Mediterranean.

Psili Ammos, located on the eastern coast, is one of the island’s most popular beaches with crystal clear waters and soft white sand. Kassidi, which is around 6km away from the main town, is another beautiful beach worth visiting. Kambi Beach, located just 1km away from the main town, is also a great option for those looking to escape the crowds.

Taking a boat trip to nearby islands like Thimena, Samos, or Patmos is also a great way to experience the surrounding area. Sailing and snorkelling are other activities that visitors can indulge in while on the island.

Getting to Fourni Island is relatively easy. You can reach the nearby islands such as Ikaria by flight and then take a ferry to Fourni. From Athens’ Port Piraeus, it takes around 7-9 hours with several stopovers. Regardless of how you get there, Fourni Island is a must-visit for anyone looking for a peaceful and authentic Greek island experience.
